How to create your one word intention for the new year

At this time of year, we are bombarded with… “New Year, New You,” Resolutions, do this, try this, ditch this... Yet these are all so fixated on outward action, and in my opinion do not set you up for lasting and authentic transformation.

I prefer to set one word intentions for my year. These are softer, broader, compassionate areas to work on that are not defined by specific external goals. They set powerful direction when you are making decisions about where you should focus your energy.

My words for 2023 are Ease and Authenticity. I know they are so aligned as they bring me all of the feels and raise my vibration. In the space of intention setting when you know it's aligned, you KNOW it... And I mean deeply on a cellular level.

If you want to create your one word intentions, follow these journaling steps.

1. Reflect on the past year:

Unearth all of your joys, celebrations and lessons from the past year. Don’t be shy… brag, boast and say yeah I did that and had a lot of fun in the process! Allow yourself to feel all of the emotions from these memories. Plus accept, embrace and look for the lessons from your journey in the past year, as finding the lessons from the tough times welcomes in more growth and raises your vibration. Journal on:

  • What has brought me joy and fulfilment this year?

  • What have I learnt this year?

2. Allow yourself to dream:

Take an aligned and limitless view of 2023, with a deep knowing that you are fully supported to realise your heart's desires. Ask yourself the following questions and see what magic flows into you. Capture this vision however you feel inspired to - write, draw, collage, paint it, make it into a song… Whatever float’s your boat.

Journal on:

  • What do I want to call in for 2023?

  • What do I want to open my heart to in 2023?

  • How can I create a two way energy exchange that gives back to the world, as well as receives?

3. Capturing those dreams into your intentions:

Then read your list out loud and feel into the energy of each. As you do, ask if they truly light you up, or is there anything that you have put down because it is a “should?” Get rid of those unaligned should's as they are stories you have borrowed from others.

Identify your key priorities that you are committed to bringing in in 2023 - highlighting the ones that you really feel a desire for.

From this place of alignment and connection, see if one or two words download in your mind that sets your overarching intentions for next year. These are single words that you will live by in 2023 - to invite as much of this energy in.

4. Take inspired action to make it happen:

And finally, intentions without action are just some nice words on a page. So make your commitment to YOU that each and every day you will consciously look for opportunities to bring the energy of your intentions in.

Visualise and speak your intention into existence. When you're walking around, say your words out loud to yourself as an affirmation, for example, mine would be, “I live each day with ease and authenticity”. Create a vision board to bring your word to life. Or simply put your words on post its and stick them everywhere that will catch your eye and say, “Hiyaa, remember me?”.

Make sure that each week you are taking action and making decisions from the place of your intentions. Choose 1-2 areas at a time to work on and break large goals up into smaller bite sized chunks. And…. Celebrate all of the small wins along the way! Because you are doing it, making these changes, and no doubt creating your ripple effect on this world. Yeah!
